As a young solicitor formerly articled to Mr Minter of Armidale, he arrived in Armidale in November 1863 for a court case. He returned in 1864 aged 24 years and set up business in a small shop in Beardy Street near to the court house. Later ge moved to a larger cottage in Faulkner Street and as the business grew, he built the present day offices opposite the War Memorial Library (the old premises on Faulkner Street). He was an alderman for many years and Mayor in 1886.

His wife was Miss Emily Bedwell whim he married at Paterson on 11 June 1872. Their first home in Barney Street opposite Central Park, was a teacher's College residence by November 1963. they had twelve children. He was a life-long trustee and eventual patron of the Jockey Club. His other interests included the Anglican Diocesan Synod, the Cathedral Parish and The Armidale School. At different times, he was a trustee and solicitor of the Armidale Building Society.

He died on 14 July 1910, aged 71 years. Following a service at St. Peter's Cathedral, he was buried in the Anglican section of the Armidale cemetery.
