Rosemary Leitch was the first female mayor of council elected in council's 125 years of history. Born in Sydney and a graduate of the Sydney University, she came to Armidale in 1960 with her husband Dr David Leitch, (a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England, Edinburgh and Melbourne). Her husband served for several years as the National Party member for Armidale before being defeated by Mr Bill McCarthy of the Labor Party in 1978. She was first elected to council in 1983 and served for many years as chairman of the Presbyterian Ladies College in Armidale.
