A new landfill is needed to provide a long-term disposal solution for the Armidale Region that may also cater for the adjoining local government area (LGA) of Uralla Council. Armidale Regional Council is therefore planning to construct a new landfill facility to replace the existing landfill operations at the Armidale Waste Management Facility on Long Swamp Road which has almost reached its capacity.
The Existing Waste Facilities
The existing landfill site operated by Armidale Regional Council is located within the Armidale Waste Management Facility at Long Swamp Road in Armidale. It is a General Solid Waste (putrescible) facility that currently accepts approximately 15,500 tonnes from Armidale Regional LGA annually. Over 60% of the total waste generated in the Armidale Regional LGA is removed for recycling. Small waste transfer stations are located throughout the regional LGA at Ben Lomond, Ebor, Guyra, Hillgrove, Llangothlin, Tilbuster and Wollomombi. These former landfills now operate only as waste transfer stations with the waste transferred mostly to the Armidale Long Swamp Road Waste Management Facility. A second landfill (and transfer station) does exist at Tingha and its future operations and management are currently being reviewed.
The existing landfill at the Long Swamp Road Waste Management Facility had reached capacity and a minor extension has been constructed to provide additional capacity for the four years. A new landfill is therefore required now, so that some reserve capacity remains at long swamp Road.
The New Regional Waste Facility
Armidale Regional Council has, over a long time, worked methodically and diligently towards finding and establishing a new landfill site to cater for the regions waste disposal needs for the next fifty years Following is a timeline of the major stages of this process.
