George Allingham

Mayor 1863 - 1864

The eldest son of Edward and Elizabeth Allingham (nee Morrow), he was born on 6 March 1829 in Ireland. He arrived with the family on the ship 'Percy' on 28 August 1841. He was educated at Dixon's school at Maitland and came to Armidale at about the age of 12 years to join his family who had come directly to New England. He married Margaret Coventry at Oban in 1853.

His father Edward established a mill in Beardy Street, opposite the street named after him. Edward was the licencee of the Rose Inn in 1850 and once owned the blocks where the gasworks and Olympic Pool now stand as well the Union Store.After retiring he recommenced business as an auctioneer and commission agent and took over the business of Lewis Markham on the latter's death in 1881. He became the first Armidale mayor. Aged 69 years, George died on 6 April or 8 April 1898. He was a magistrate for many years and had a long association with the Armidale and New England Hospital, P.A. Society and the licensing bench.
