Heritage listings
The Armidale region has an outstanding built, natural and cultural heritage that includes places of historical, social, archaeological, architectural and aesthetic value.
Over 20 buildings and places in the region have State heritage significance and are listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.
Heritage studies have identified over 450 items in the local government area that have local heritage significance as well as four heritage conservation areas. The heritage items are listed in Schedule 5 of the Armidale Dumaresq Local Environmental Plan 2012 and Guyra Local Environmental Plan 2012 . The conservation areas are in Armidale and are shown on the Heritage Map for Armidale Dumaresq Local Environmental Plan 2012.

Heritage provisions – LEPs and DCPs
Clause 5.10 of the Armidale Dumaresq and Guyra LEPs relates to heritage conservation and identifies when development requires approval and the matters that need to be considered and addressed. Where a development application is required guidelines and controls are also available in:

Minor works
Some minor works may be carried out without the need for development consent under subclause 5.10(3) of the Armidale Dumaresq and Guyra LEPs if council is notified of the proposed development and advises the applicant in writing before any work is carried out that it is satisfied the work is of a minor nature. A minor works notification form is available and should be completed and submitted with council. Council will confirm whether or not the works are of a minor nature and if a development application is required.
Heritage Colour Scheme Brochure
Council has developed a heritage colour schemes brochure to provide guidance to landowners to help them manage heritage properties and cover a range of common questions regarding what approvals are required. The guidelines also contain best practice techniques for repainting heritage items or buildings within a Heritage Conservation Area and provides a list of approved colours which are suitable for the different styles of buildings within Armidale and which will improve the heritage character of the town.

Heritage Advisory Service
Council retains the services of a Heritage Advisor who can provide expert advice where required. Should you wish to speak with Council heritage advisor on any specific matters relating to heritage, please contact Council’s customer service team and request to book a time. Council’s heritage advisor visits Armidale on the first Tuesday of every month and is usually available between 9am and 12noon, by appointment.
