Alexander Richardson, 'a gentleman of independent means' was elected to council in 1879. He was born the second son to John and Janet Richardson in Brisbane in 1852. His father, the Hon. John Richardson MLC established business and property interests in Brisbane and Queensland but 'ill luck and depression resulted in heavy losses in the 1860s. He came to Armidale in 1872, bought John Moore's store and began again'. The firm J. Richardson and Co. was established that year and Alexander became manager. After serving as mayor for two years, he resigned from council in March 1882.

Unmarried, he passed away at the Hotel Metropole in Sydney on Sunday 23 October. He left two brothers Russell (Armidale), Arthur (Sydney) and two sisters Mesdames C. Higinbotham and J. Slade. On Tuesday 25 October, he was buried in the Waverley Cemetery.
