Following a short illness, he died in the Armidale and New England Hospital on 26 May 1942, aged 84 years. He established the firm of Walter J. Hawke and Co. in Armidale about 1896 and had carried it on since then until shortly before his death. He was a member of the City Council for many years and took an active part in public affairs. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Armidale saleyards and performed the opening ceremony in 1909. He was a member of the Armidale and New England Jockey Club committee for many years and was made a life member for his services rendered. He was a member of the council of the Country Stock and Station Agent;s Association and held an auctioneer's license for many years. Mrs Hawke predeceased her husband by three years and five sons and three daughters survive. The funeral took place in Armidale following a service at St. Presbyterian's Church. In February 1964 the City Council announced a new street between the New England Highway and Rockvale Road will be names Hawke street.
