He was the grandson of the late George William Piddington who retired from council a few years before World War 11 and the son of Harley William and Jessie Lavina (nee Mackay). Born in Armidale, he attended Armidale High School and became the third generation to continue the business of Funeral Directors established in 1899. Following outbreak of war, he was mobilised into the 12th Australia Light Horse, transferred into the 12th Motor Regiment and later served with the 3rd Armoured Division. He served in the Australian Army for three years and was discharged in 1944 on occupational grounds. He joined the Armidale chamber of Commerce in 1945 and was the foundation secretary in 1949 of the organisation which eventually became the Ex-Services Club. In 1943 he joined the Masonry Lodge Armidale and the Grand Lodge rank was conferred on him in 1975. He is a life member of the Armidale and new England caged birdclub; was president of the Armidale High School Parents and Citizen's Association; president of the Road Safety Council and member of the Armidale Apex and the Lions Clubs. Since 1940 he has been a member of the Australian Funeral Director's Association. He was elected an alderman from 1957 to 1971 inclusive and was a member of the executive of the Local Government Association from 1968 to 1971.
