He was the owner and first occupant of 'Southall' at 98 Barney Street, built in 1886. He suffered a seizure on 22 February 1909 and died, aged 58 years after practicing his profession in Armidale for about thirty-four or thirty-five years. 

He was the local Government Medial Officer appointed in May 1900 and doctor and the Armidale and New England Hospital. Among other community offices he held were: member of St. Peter's Cathedral Council; member and honorary secretary of the Armidale School Directorate; president of the Armidale School of Arts and member of the local bench of magistrates.

He was twice married, his second marriage being only a couple of year's duration and he was survived by his widow and grown-up family. He had practiced his profession in Armidale since 1875 and was the son of Dr. George Wigan of Maitland, formerly of England.

He was buried in the Church of England cemetery, Armidale after a special service at St. Peters Cathedral.
