Born at Sydney, he came to Armidale from Ballina in 1927 for health reasons. He was first elected to council in 1937 and campaigned with four issues in mind: a hydro electro scheme, an aerodrome, a public library and a town planning authority. He helped establish the V.D.C. in Armidale and was re-elected in December 1941. In July 1942, he enlisted and was gazetted as an acting Lieutenant and posted to one of the divisions which recently returned from the Middle East. He also served in the Great War with the First Regiment of Light Horse in the Middle East as a trooper.

He was one of the first representatives of council on the New England County Council and worked with the Hon. D.H. Drummond to establish a public library. He was an inaugural member of the Armidale Beautification Committee formed at a public meeting. He served with a number of community organisations: a foundation member and president of the Legacy Club; a foundation member of the Repatriation Committee; president and life member of the R.S.L., Armidale branch; committee member of the Golf Club; member and treasurer of N.E.G.'s School Council; foundation committeeman of the Armidale Club as well as being a member and chairman of the Technical College. He served as treasurer for 12 years and member of the Hospital Board; life member and head steward of the Armidale P.A. and H. Association and foundation chairman of the Armidale and New England Co-operative Building society. He was elected patron of the Save the Children Fund and Senior Citizen's Association and as long serving member of the Rotary Club he was club president in 1940 and 1941 and district governor. In October 1951 he was presented with a Local Government Long Service certificate.
